Tim wasn't fired. Clearly despite Woodface being an amazing album and the band doing many amazing shows with Tim in the band, the live dynamic changed. Tim's a good multi instrumentalist but his natural gift is to be a front man not just blend into the background. By the early 90s Neil had gotten used to having his own band and I guess liked not having to share the limelight. Then you add the larger than life personality that was Hessie.
I think it's pretty widely accepted that Tim and the band mutually agreed to part ways. But he wasn't fired. And Tim has since joined them live many times both the classic and revived line ups.
