What do you think is the reason behind the track order of the 2CD version being slightly different to the YouTube stream?
Well the Youtube stream clearly has the correct set list order as presented on the night. Hard to say why it was tweaked beyond there being some preference for the flow of the rearranged set list on the CD/DVD/Blu Ray release - I have never compared the two in detail and in all honesty hadn't noticed the absence of "They Thought I Was Asleep" until you highlighted it.
Sometimes songs are grouped together in a show to save time switching instruments, keeping songs together which use a different guitar tuning, keeping songs together were Neil would be on piano, etc. - I'd have to revisit the Youtube steam (it appears to still be online) and the DVD and watch everything closely to see if that is applicable here, but it might not be. It could be something as mundane as keeping a balance so that there isn't a run of up tempo songs that are better interspaced with more low tempo material for a better watching experience on TV. I wonder who makes those calls.
"They Thought I Was Asleep" for me is one of those Paul Kelly songs that show that decades into his career he is capable of writing songs that are comparable with his 80's and 90's best. I've seen him perform it many times and that element of mystery in it is part of why it's such a great song. I think he first performed it here (San Francisco) solo over a couple of nights as an opening act (!) for The Waifs, and it was one of those pin drop moments during his set each night.
As I recall it, Paul was on tour in North America when the "Going Your Way" tour was announced and he cut the tour short by a few dates so he could return to have more rehearsal time with Neil, playing the final show in San Francisco. SO many people asked him after the show if the tour was going to play beyond Australia. He said it was doubtful and was sadly correct. He returned to tour North America shortly after the tour with Neil and it kicked off back in San Francisco - always a good thing when there are just months between his Northern Hemisphere performances!
I've dug out my Deluxe edition of "Going You Way" and also the yellow vinyl Record Store Day release of a 10 track highlights of the show and both state in the sleeve notes that they were "recorded in Sydney on Monday 18th March 2013" - very specific! So I think it's safe to assume that they earmarked the final night of the tour to be streamed live/preserved/released and nailed it.
