What is it with people who expect a "note-perfect" performance from Neil. Neil has never been "note-perfect". That has always been what endeared me to Neil. "His mistake there during the live performance completely undercut the emotional climax of the song." So basically you are saying that one bum note ruined the entire song for you. WOW!! I admit that I am not a musician so that may be why I barely noticed the mistakes but I would venture to say that not many in the audience probably noticed it either. Good grief, have you seen some of the early Enz performances where Neil is just barely playing guitar. Neil used to joke how they used to put his guitar low in the mix. He is clearly now a much better guitar player then he was then. So Neil made a mistake. Well "Stop the Presses"! Neil had trouble with his red guitar during the Toronto show, but like a little trooper he is he put on a big smile and carried on. Remember Live Earth. Well if that had been Axl Rose, he would have shouted "You Bleep Bleep Bleep!" " I am not putting up with this Bleep Bleep Bleep!" And then he would proceed to smash the mike on the ground and then walk off stage. Well, that's not Neil and I love him for that. Just my two cents.
Neil makes plenty of mistakes when playing live and we're all very forgiving. But it's another thing to release those mistakes on a professionally recorded and mastered album. Clearly someone in charge agrees with that or else they would not have gone back and fixed the mistakes in "Shoes Under My Bed". And I would argue that the fact that they went back and fixed it is proof of how off-putting the error was. I can only assume that they don't think the bum notes in "Message" ruined the song in the same way they did on "Shoes"
You can hear the original non-corrected version of "Shoes Under My Bed" here:
The error is around 1:10.30. Give it a listen and decide for yourself. It frustrated me at the time because I was really looking forward to enjoying Neil's performance of that Paul Kelly song for years to come, but not if it was going to have such obvious bad notes. Thankfully it was corrected and now I think it's one of the best songs Neil has recorded in the past 10 years!
