The 1994 BBC Radio 1 CH Fleadh Festival performance was immaculate. The first broadcast of a live gig on radio that I listened to in it's entirety, it was just as I was getting into Crowded House, and indeed getting seriously into music, and I was blown away. Apart from the majesty of the songs and the banter it was the bands tightness that 'got me going'. And just listen to how crisp the drumming is on Weather, Locked Out, Private etc.
At that time I'd not seen the boys live, so I simply devoured this performance for many, many moons afterwards. I'd recorded it onto cassette tape as it was being broadcast, from the mixing desk, and was listening to it regularly up until about 1998 when the the tape finally disintegrated. It got played at home, at camping trips, parties and at kitchens where I worked. I used to turn several Nirvanna/grunge loving friends onto CH.
Also, the '94 Jools Holland performance was during the same week as Fleadh, and I still maintain this was their/NF's best performance to date on this program. In My Command, Fingers of Love and Private Universe - performed by a tour-tight, note perfect band. The VHS recording of this show met a similar fate to the Fleadh cassette tape - worn out after countless viewings.
Afterglow's 'Help Is coming' is a track I've returned to many times, and I've always, always thought the atmosphere / feel of this recording would, at the time, have served a 5th CH studio album very well.
Peter Jones was definitely part of my being captured forever by CH and NF.
I also had the pleasure of seeing Peter and Nick perform as part of Deadstar, in a tiny Abersytwyth bar during the 90's.
Thank you Peter, and RIP x
