New Single: "More Than One Of You"

During today's webcast "More Than One of You" was recorded. It will be mixed and mastered later today and should be available as downloadable single on digitale outlets like iTunes next week, 11 August 2017.

It features Neil on piano and vocal, a choir and a small string section (violin and cello). The string arrangment is by Victoria Adams, who did the arrangements for "Dizzy Heights".

"More Than One Of You" has been played live a couple of times earlier. It was premiered during two shows of the Cross-Linx festival in the Netherlands in February 2016 by Neil Finn and Glenn Kotsche's Unlimited  Orchestra and once more in Boulder, Colorado in June 2016.

Original Post

Victoria Kelly was the string arranger for Dizzy Heights

If you watched the webcast, you realized how positive and effervescent she is. I love her work.  Plus she's a fellow Prince fan.  And obviously, Neil rates high on her list.

I'm glad she's back in the fold for this album.

as for the song in question, I felt goosebumps.  I was partial to take 3.

Do we know whose producing the album?  Neil, himself?

I'm with you on the goosebumps!  Take 3 was when they really started to kick in.  It's a lovely song, isn't it?  Although I can't fathom what the lyrics mean.  But surely, over time, an elaborate story will subconsciously form in my head that will make them make sense to me.  It wouldn't be the first time I've done that with one of Neil's songs!

One more question, Guy. Do you feel this is the actual final cut for the album, or will they continue to tweak it and this will wind up as an alternate version? I ask since he said the album would be recorded the last week of August.

Hi Steve, no problem. Yes, the album will be recorded on the final day, with the exception of one song; the one the recorded today. Neil explained this during the webcast. I think it only needs to be mixed, although a punch-in of one or two flubbed words is possible.

Are you someone official from the Neil Finn camp? Or is all your information from public sources

Nahh, I just took notes of all that Neil said. ;-)

Still abstaining from webcasts (for all reasons I explained in another thread - dont suggest to anyone else should abstain ), but I had to listen More than one of you, its already released single after all. Unfortunately, didnt hear it on some Croatian radio station yet, but on youtube. What to say? Pretty mixed feelings about it at first. Needed more than couple of listenings to start loving it. Maybe too many for some big hit potential. But, have to admit it, these kind of songs with strong vocal (maybe one of Neils best and strongest vocals ever), and piano driven (Adele springs to mind) goes very well these days. So, I am really hoping this song could deserve some spininig on radio station. For me, I like it. After 5th listening, couldnt go to the PC without listening it. Strong, emotional song, very very deep. Lovely in one word. In some way, reminds me on Try whistling this song, and its very good thing also. Very excited to hear rest of the album.

Question for frenz (specially who lives in UK, Aus and NZ) - any chance to listen it on some natioonal or local radio stations..or maybe you already did hear it?

Didnt resist... Second Nature - one of the songs in which is refrein worse than rest of the song, and I dont mean it in a good way...far under his level, ordinary pop, reminded me on Paul Wellers wonderings in most of the 80s ... what he was thinkg about? ...started (or better said continued - I started already when I heard that he was planning to record 3 albums material in short time) to worry about rest of new material. Sorry

Haven't  heard it on the radio as yet. I'm wondering why it's taking so long for Australian radios to pick up? Bought the single, cd and vinyl. Am practicing patience for Friday nights atm. Very happy with what we have heard so far. Am still waiting for a deeper darker song to appear. I know Neil is capable.

I think Second nature is a cool song, love the chord progressions, mainly minor with a burst of major in the chorus, and it has a kind of prechorus too, which I like. I don't know what it's about either but it has that expectant/yearning thing going on.

Am I the only one who thinks that issuing individual tracks as download "singles" is counter-productive for an artist like Neil these days? There's no way in hell it'll get anywhere near the charts and all that does is send a message to media that the artist is past it and that no one is interested.

I really like the idea of us being able to watch Neil make a record and it's fun to have individual songs available as they're recorded but I'm not sure if it's in his best interests to do it this way. Just a muse...

Releasing singles is not just about charting, especially these days. It can be an effective promotional tool even if the artist is way smaller than Neil...many (most?) artists release them knowing they are unlikely to chart. For someone like Neil, his single may not make the top 100 but it is likely to be played on stations like KCRW in LA and the like. It's like a trailer for a movie, getting the hype train rolling. It may not reach a mass audience but it will reach HIS audience.

I beg to differ ....

I had a go a transcribing the lyrics.   Not sure if it's a 100%, but here is my effort:

More Than One of You - Neil Finn

Make it level
Don't misunderstand
Make it level
On the other hand

Every age is a different colour
Deeper far, the memory of the sun

If you want to take your place
Find a present every day
If you want to answer yes
We won't have to double guess

And there is more than one of you
But only one of them is true

Make it level
When you take a breath
Make it level
There is enough time left

If you want to take your place
Find the present every day
If you want to answer yes
She'll follow you right into bed

Well, there is more than one of you
But only one of them is true

Running around her
Knowing that
There is more than one of you
But only one of them is true
Only one of them is true
Only one of them is you
