"Listen" - new song by Neil Finn

Listen
Angels fell to me
Silver eyes are seeing
And I'm lying on the floor

Listen
Down under the surface
Silence has a purpose
I don't see you anymore

Listen
Waves just keep on rolling
Starlight never ending
It's a line you've heard before

Is it for myself or for her I cry
Like the wind that moans
When is my girl coming home
Home

Listen
It's a good time for living
The season of forgiving
It's so easy to ignore

Listen
I'm conjuring up a vision
Of someone I'm really missing
I see her standing in the door

There's a mad cat caroling in the dead of night
With the midnight shade
When is my girl coming home
Home

Listen
Machines will always be running
And radiation humming

And I hear the answer calling
In the arrival hall

When is my girl coming home
I don't know where she's gone
It could anywhere

I want my baby home
Where she belongs

Come home

And I hear the answer calling
In the arrival hall

Where is my girl
When is my girl coming home
Home
Home
Home
Home

Thanks for sharing. I feel like I've heard this before somewhere, but not sure where. I'm pretty certain this wasn't played at all during the four Infinity Sessions. Must have been a contender for Out Of Silence you would think.

Just a pity there were no b-sides or supplementary songs recorded for this album. Not since Time on Earth ten years ago has there really been any extra studio out-takes available as b-sides.

The chorus actually reminds me of the coda to Into The Sunset.

I believe this song was played in Sydney at the Nordoff music of therapy and another charity.

I really like this song.  I agree that this was likely a contender for the Out of Silence album especially as it includes a line about silence. In fact, the name of the album may have come from this song's lyrics.

Would be incredible to hear how the song would sound with a Victoria Kelly arrangement and full "Out of Silence" musical treatment.

I think I have most of the lyrics correct as above although I'm not sure about he "angels fell to me" line.  My wife thinks it's "Angeles fell to me".  My daughter thinks we're both wrong.

My wife now thinks the first verse is:

"Listen
Angela's spell on me
Silver eyes are seeing
And I'm lying on the floor"

She tells me that Angela's spell is from Greek mythology and was a spell that Angela placed on twenty guards to free her friends and family during the Siege of Dras-Leona.  I'm not sure if she's correct on the line but it's certainly interesting.

Are you referring to the Neil/Liam album? Interesting, if so. I was expecting a more raucous, rock disc. Maybe this will be a change-of-pace song.

Yes. Yesterday I tweeted Neil asking him what the first line in "Listen" is as it's difficult to tell from the audio on YouTube. Neil tweeted back that it's "Angelus bells are ringing".  Of course, it sounds so clear now that I know the lyric.

And he also said that "Listen" will be the first track on the new album to be released in the first half of 2018.  I assume he's referring to the Neil/Liam album although he didn't specify that.  Liam has said that they're looking for a name for the band - I wonder if "Angelus Bells" is being considered. Would be a great band name.

Contenders for the new album:

Listen

Meet Me in the Air

We Know What it Means

Anger Plays a Part

Any Other Way

Troubles

(above six titles played by Neil and Liam at two Largo shows in 2016)

There and Back Again

(Played by Neil in concert once in 2015)

Serious in Love

(Out of Silence outtake from 2017)

Not My Fault

(Played by Neil in concert once in 2014

I seriously doubt he uses "There and Back Again" since it was written for the Hobbit movie and not used. Unless he totally changes the lyrics and re-titles it. I would love to hear it though, if anyone has a recording (hint, hint). I do hope "Serious in Love" makes the cut, that is a great song. Hate that it got dropped from Out of Silence. Pretty good odds on the top six, I'd say. Thanks for the info.
