I can only speak from one experience of meeting Neil, but he was charming, friendly and good-natured after the PW concert last July. He stayed outside for a long time, signing stuff and chatting with us. Donovan, maybe sometime you'll get to meet him yourself, and then you'll feel differently. I think this is comparable to those fans of Counting Crows' singer Adam Duritz, who is notorious for blowing hot and cold after his shows. I think it depends on his mood, and none of us should judge...

Wow...what a cool list Gen! We were less heavy on the Finn stuff during the reception since the ceremony had so much. BUT...we burned CD's based on stuff from our collection. I had Fast 1 & 2, Medium 1 & 2, Slow 1 & 2. We hand-picked every song, made a chart for the DJ's with which songs were where and how long each one was, and said, play whatever you want with these CD's. Here's what I remember WAS used (and I'm sure there were more, but you tend to forget that stuff when...

You're right, awamutu--that's a hard association to top! That faint sound coming from your speakers is me sighing with envy. Martine, I remember hearing about Split Enz in the early MTV days and seeing at least part of the "One Step Ahead" video. I was interested by the band and charmed that they were from oh-so-exotic New Zealand. Then they abruptly disappeared from MTV, at least as I recall things, and that was that. My attention returned to matters like upholding the honor of Rush in the...

Well Evvie, Had my brother gone to your school, he would have defended your right to think Geddy Lee is more good looking than Adam Ant (...well....at least Geddy never wore lip gloss) (or wore pirate shirts) I don't recall ever seeing ANY Split Enz videos during the time period ('79-83) but their records were played frequently at places (ahem) I frequented and when my interest in Neil developed, I was sort of pleased with my younger self as I was sure I had bought at least one Split Enz...

Sure, awamutu, anybody can screw up, but people indulgently ignore it when the person flubbing is one who wrote the words. The rest of us get no such mercy. Martine, at the risk of dragging this TOTALLY off topic, I'd actually say now that Adam Ant *was* better looking than Geddy Lee. I might even have noticed that if I hadn't been blinded by mad infatuation. Scuttling back to topic: For me, too, Tim Finn's musical style is an acquired taste. But then, so was Neil's, in a different way. When...

The Geddy Lee/Adam Ant/Hall and Oates stories have brought to mind a CH-related tale of mine, which is along the same lines... My first year of university (1991), I was taking a fairly specialised course, so most of us in the course knew each other fairly well. I was the one known for wearing CH and Enz tour t-shirts about four days out of five... anyway, a group of us were studying one day, and one of the girls piped up, "Oh, Fiona. Here is the list. 1976 - Coleco Telstar Arcade 1978 - Atari 2600 1982 - Colecovision along with an expansion unit that allowed you to play all the Atari 2600 cartridges. Yes Mona, I was aware of 1996/1997 interviews where Nick admitted being really pissed off about Neil ending the band, however I don't remember him ever saying stuff like this: "Neil had a particular way of maintaining his authority. The threat of breaking up the band was always hanging over the band, and delivered by Neil. and "It was one of those mind games that, towards the end, just became annoying until he finally, ultimately, pulled the pin." So you don't think Nick spoke to the news...

Weird as I was just responding to Mo/Maureen on the List that out of Nick and Paul it was Nick who really wanted the band to go on, Paul had long long left, and really Nick was pissed off. It's his right, especially at the time. Saying all that it's actually been quite awhile since the split and you would expect that most people would move on. Several things to think about: 1/ Nick has had quite a few occasions to tell Neil what he thinks, and from the times I have been around have never...

Wuntie Pretty sure Neil never hinted at going solo, that was just natural. You have to remember that demo's had been done for some songs (with Peter Jones) as possible tracks for the next Crowded House album. The plan was release Recurring Dream and tour and record the new CD off the back of that no talk of any solo stuff etc. It all happened when we were in London VERY quickly, just a decision to finish and yep Neil lit the match! I'm with you, Sandra, I don't know a tremendous amount about the personal relationships within the band members... but I'll agree with Jenn, we have no idea what the conversation was between Nick and the reporter. Nick might have talked at length about Tarmac Adam, and then only made one small remark (probably when prodded) about CH, and the reporter chose to let that part go to the press, instead of anything else (more relevant) that was discussed. If similarly Anglo-inspired pop bands like Fountains Of Wayne and The New Pornographers are "relevent" enough to "belong" at Coachella, how ridiculous is it to say the opposite of Crowded House? I know Adam Schlesinger from FOW worships Neil's songwriting. In their own way, the bands mentioned and others like The Raconteurs are aiming for the same goal as Crowded House--finely crafted, intelligent, melodic pop. Only Crowded House did it 10-20 years ago, often better, and are still totally...
