It's actually a Tam Tam (large orchestral gong) that he plays during the instrumental in Charlie from the same concert. He also uses it for comic effect in My Mistake. I noticed the Gretsch, It's a Tenessean or Country Gent I think. It looks like an epiphone casino or 335 that he plays on What's The Matter With You, have to look more closely, and I'm sure it isn't plugged in.

The sound would have only dropped out on mono TVs. The problem was due to the left and right audio channels in the interview sections being out of phase with each other. When listened to in stereo, this gives a 3D effect, but in mono the channels cancel each other out almost completely. This happens occasionally on TV and radio due to carelessness and/or faulty cables. The broadcaster is normally monitoring in stereo and so often doesn't notice the problem.

I pretty much agree with what you say here, P.F. I can't really describe the effect that Neil's songs have on me, other than to say that they reach somewhere deep down inside me and wrap themselves around my heart in a way that I haven't experienced with any other songwriter. But having said that, that can be an intense feeling that can get overwhelming in large doses. I don't really feel that Tim adds what Neil is "lacking," but rather he adds a different dimension to the music, that breaks...

Why does cohesion have to be a mark of a quality album? Look at The Beatles' 'White Album' - probably the biggest rag-bag of different musical styles, half-finished ideas, as well as pure classics that you're ever likely to hear. It has absolutely no theme. A very uncoherent album, but it works. Even George Martin didn't want to put it out as a double album but was talked round. I actually like Woodface because the mixture of styles had never been so obvious on a CH album before. It runs...

I agree with Heidi's points about the culture of fast food being obnoxious and misleading, but I can't agree that fast food is the same as smoking. The HUGE difference between the fast food and tobacco situations is that nicotene is chemically addictive over the long-term, which interferes with the user's ability to make a rational choice about whether to even USE the product. The cig companies KNEW this (the prosecution had the memos) and they put it in there anyway, without the knowledge...

Great show last night. Arrived late and only caught the last two minutes of the Rhett Miller set. The band was a little less polished than last summer in DC - not surprising, given that (1) Lisa Germano was absent due to friend's illness, (2) first show on the tour, (3) preponderance of live "rarities" in the set. Steinberg needed to turn down the amp on his bass. About five songs in Neil asked who had been at the show last summer, and then who hadn't - sounded like about 60% of audience was...

What a great show. What a great night. Charlotte Anne has done a terrific job of describing the whole thing, although the Split Enz song was One Step Ahead, not I Got You. While I thought the whole thing was fantastic, the show REALLY started to take off after people stood up. *laughs* At some stage late in the show (I think it was during "She Will Have Her Way"?), 2 girls stood up, and Neil made a point of pointing out "the two brave girls - you look good standing up" -- or something to...

Neil mentioned the appearance during the concert last night. He seemed a little put off about being considered Australian, he said something to the effect of "a New Zealander likes being called Australian as much as a Canadian likes being mistaken for an American" which resonated with the audience.

While I can't shed any light on the origin or the future of Gentle Hum, I can describe its effect on the Detroit crowd. Neil prefaced it by saying that songs are great but there's something special about a hum. He played this sweet, gently rolling melody on the keyboard and hummed alongside it. It was hypnotic. As he came to the end, he invited the crowd to join in, and the hall vibrated under the collective hum. It was an electric experience--so simple yet so powerful. It was like...

I didn't say it was ok to trade blank CD-Rs - I said many fans do. When people "trade" for blank cd-r's the person with the live show burns the show on blank cd-rs sent by the person without the show. This means that in effect the person burning does not buy or sell the cds - just burns them. The recipient sends off a blank cd and gets the same cd...

Yeah, Jamie is dead right. There's a 95% chance that NF's Gold Top is a 1969,1970,or 1971 GIBSON Deluxe. The pickups are smaller mini humbuckers, that are set in a metal case, then into a plastic base, and that have another plastic "ring" surrounding them. This was applied to hide factory mistakes/blemishes. The main factor in this particular guitars looks is that it was subject to very extensive use from around 1981 - 2000. Sweat is the major enemy of guitar lacquer...it erodes it over time.
