I finally got my very own copy of the Enz DVD yesterday. To begin with, I felt a wee bit guilty about splashing out NZ$40, especially as I don't have my own DVD player. However, since the DVD is selling like hotcakes, I decided "yeah, why not?". First impressions of my first-ever DVD? WOW!!! This thing is fantastic. It's hard to pick out one particular favourite feature, as the whole package is great. Despite having had limitations on what could be licenced for use on the DVD and also time...

Two questions for Gryphon. Is Paul Hester playing live with the enz? I was really bummed when he didn't play at the "Enz Of The Milleniuem" shows in late 1999. Still don't know why, but I hope he can make it this time. I was also wondering if Split Enz might play some of the songs they recorded in mid 1999. How cool would it be to hear the enz play something new(ish). I'd love to hear their versions of Edible Flowers and Sawdust And Splinters.

I got my copy at Target Roselands for AU$26.95 - cheap compared to HMV etc. Love how Neil Finn sings on This Is Massive (originally studio Paul Hester sings it) - it's at the start of the Catch 22 interview Mean To Me intro playing softly but hear-able in the back ground - I'd love for that to come out as Afterglow 2 rare song - it sounds so good. Plus were any frenz fans at the CD / book store signing autograph in the US on the Catch 22 interview? You all looked so yound, fresh fanned and good!

Re: POLL: Finn On Finn>> Influence On Woodface's Success

Why does cohesion have to be a mark of a quality album? Look at The Beatles' 'White Album' - probably the biggest rag-bag of different musical styles, half-finished ideas, as well as pure classics that you're ever likely to hear. It has absolutely no theme. A very uncoherent album, but it works. Even George Martin didn't want to put it out as a double album but was talked round. I actually like Woodface because the mixture of styles had never been so obvious on a CH album before. It runs...

Here's what Stranger Than Fiction has to say about that gig, sometime after October, 1983: "Mushroom planned an extravaganza at Ballarat, and drove a hefty contigent of press, media and television people up for the show. A special function was held backstage, where the band were handed presentation discs to celebrate the sales of more than a million records in Australia over their career. The show had a few glitches technically, Noel produced the 'Russian' cossies for the first time, the...

The Enz played Ballarat a few times, but the Hester show was quite an interesting one. It was certainly bad timing for Molly Meldrum as the Frenz of the Enz club hired a bus to take members to this first show. The thing that always amazed me was simply it was a good show, not a brilliant show, but a good show, and from memory THREE quite solid encores tended to show that the crowd wanted more. I played a tape of that gig recently and it sounds like a typical Enz show from the time. Quite a...

Thanks, Heidi. Maybe thats why the Vancouver show seemed abit cold, compared to July. I thought it might be a last show thing. (Vancouver is often the last stop.) Like the Crowded House concert where Paul Hester took off just before Vancouver. It felt like the boys were just going through the motions.

Haven't posted in a lonnng time (around Neil's summer tour) but anyway, saw this topic and I thought I'd post as I heard "Last To Know" stepping out of the Monorail at Disneyland and into Disney Walks area this past Tuesday. I was very happy to hear it and wished Neil and band were playing up away at the OC HOB. Also saw Paul Hester making "Fruit Salad" on the Wiggles show while getting ready to head to the "Tragic Kingdom". Cheers All.

Well, seeing as I created this poll (my first), I may as well post what I voted for and where I rank each title. 1. I voted for Split Enz - The collection. This release has to be every Finn/Enz fans wet dream come true. Beautifully remastered video clips of most of the bands hits, live video tracks from between 1977 and 1993, the fantastic hour long Spellbound doco. You simply can't fault anything on this. 2. Neil Finn - Seven Worlds Collide. A very close second. Whilst this release contains...

Weird topic, but here goes. Mark Hart went back to his old group Supertramp after the breakup of CH and then made a solo album called Nada Sonata. On a side note, Tim wrote a song especially for Mark's album for him. Nick Seymour joined Deadstar and left after about five minutes and did some work on an Andy White album a few years ago. I don't think hes recorded or played much since then. Paul Hester co-owned and later sold a cafe in Australia, had a band called Largest Living Things (they...

This is hard as all the SE drummers were pretty great. The most talented would probably be Paul Crowther. On Mental Notes and Second Thoughts, his drumming was almost operatic. A very close second would have to be Paul Hester.

I read in an interview with Nick Seymour that Tim was supposed to be a full member, like Mark Hart became some time later. Nick also said that he would have been more comfortable if Tim had been a one-off guest for the Woodface album (and tour). At some point Neil and Tim were doing almost everything while recording Woodface, at some point replacing Paul Hester by a different drummer, Ricky Fataar. I can't remember from which source this was, I think it was a interview from 1996... (mojo ...

Hi Guy. I remember reading what sounds like the same article. I must admit that I've really gone off Nick as a person. In that article he said some pretty off things about Tim, like how he didn't even like most of Tim's solo music. How he didn't see why Tim had to join the band and couldn't just guest on the album. Nick seemed to like Tim's music just fine when Weather With You and Woodface Became CH's first single and album to make it big in the UK. Talk about ungrateful and being a...

Of course Nick stayed in CH for as long as he could. To put it bluntly, Neil was his meal ticket. Look at what everyone else has done since the crowdies broke up: Tim's continued making great solo records and made that brilliant live album with Dave Dobbyn and Bic Runga. That tour was also the highest grossing tour in the history of NZ by both international and national acts. Neil's established a highly acclaimed solo career, did that beautiful soundtrack to Rain and made a live album &...

Wuntie Pretty sure Neil never hinted at going solo, that was just natural. You have to remember that demo's had been done for some songs (with Peter Jones) as possible tracks for the next Crowded House album. The plan was release Recurring Dream and tour and record the new CD off the back of that no talk of any solo stuff etc. It all happened when we were in London VERY quickly, just a decision to finish and yep Neil lit the match! Thanks for the great post Peter. Exactly. He lived off the genius of Neil Finn for more than 10 years playing bass lines already written, enjoying the life of a rock star, earning heaps of money... and yet he still wants to make Neil look bad to the general public (and a page 9 article in Australia's highest selling tabloid is appealing to the dumbest demographic - people who's perception of Sir Neil will change for the worse). It's always sad when a group breaks up after being together a long time, but Nick really needs to let this thing go already. I think it's nice that he and Paul are back together in a new project, but the CH break-up was over seven years ago. This attitude of Nick's is getting really old, most people are past gving a **** and it can't be healthy for him. Then again maybe he is over the break-up, and is just slagging off Neil to score some publicity for his new bands album. And no, I don't buy...

Hi Secret God, I agree with what Seven Worlds wrote. I find it hard to believe that Neil arranged the songs totally by himself. There is a distinction here between writing a song, and arranging it. It's in Something So Strong that Mitchel Froom wrote the solo for Don't Dream It's Over. This is a solo though, so quite rightly he isn't credited, as Neil Finn wrote the song. Let's take it a step further, should Duke Ellington have credited Johnny Hodges (possibly the most famous of all of...

I said if someone wrote part of the song then yes I would credit them (by this I mean a song credit, as they have written part of the song). If they play on the song, then I would credit them as a player on the song, but not a song credit as they didn't write part of the song. This is standard practice, and perfectly fair IMO. Maybe. This is my first post to this or any other fan site. I didn't know Paul hester and I never met him. But I did see him play twice with split enz and four maybe five times with crowded house. Most Crowded House (i.e Neil Finn) songs are introspective: They contemplate love that didn't work, pain, failing and insecurity (among, of course, other things). It was, then, a revelation that Crowded House gigs were usually so amusing and upbeat. I can't recall a gig that didn't feature Paul Hester's...
